Quickcat Online
The prospect of creating a catalogue for your library resource centre from scratch is undoubtedly the most daunting element of automisation. Once that catalogue is in place, however, you still have to contend with the ongoing task of cataloguing new stock, either as it is ordered (if you have the Heritage Acquisitions Module) or when it is received. Quickcat Online can reduce that burden significantly, by transferring the relevant catalogue records direct to your Heritage catalogue.
We believe Quickcat Online is the fastest and most flexible method of cataloguing available. Fast because records are retrieved instantly; flexible because it retrieves those records direct to the Heritage catalogue screen. The advantage of this approach means that adjustments to the catalogue record can be made immediately, rather than revisiting the record at a later date.
Quickcat Online is a web service using SOAP which radically reduces the time taken to catalogue items by giving you online access from the Heritage Catalogue form to over 16 million up-to-date British Library, Library of Congress and National Library of Medicine catalogue records. As well as nearly having many times as many records as our previous Quickcat (which utilised BNB data only), this online database is updated regularly, making it a vital source of records for current as well as retrospective cataloguing. Searching is possible using a number of fields including author, title, publisher and ISBN. Dewey classifications are imported as a standard, but if Library of Congress or NLM classifications are preferred then this can be configured.
Access to the online data is covered by the standard Heritage
annual maintenance charge.

"Just to say how very impressed I am with Quickcat Online. Instead of picking up around 65 - 70% of books, I'm now able to scan in approx 95%. As I have 8000 books still to catalogue this is going to save hours. Great!!!!"
